But doesn’t that take away some of its character?

It does, but not having a rolling fire hazardhas it’s perks :)

Makes sense. Sometimes, scorched earth is the best approach to take. You can probably save time by re-wiring everything your way rather than trying to track down the details of someone else’s work.

Especially when the previous owner connected cables by twisting and taping.

You know, you’re making it less similar to the Ferrari you always wanted...

No joke. I’ve inherited quite a number of projects that were nearly as much electrical tape as electrical wire. I hate wiring, it’s one of my least favorite tasks on any sort of project (automotive or otherwise).

So when I do it, I make sure I only have to do it once. Solder the connections, heat wrap any exposed wiring, make sure they are labeled and diagrammed properly. Anything to make sure I don’t have to trace down a bad connection a year later.

I see no problem here. Sometimes starting from scratch is by far the best option.

how satisfying was it to release all that pent up anger in the form of destroying the wiring system of a 2000lb+ object

Yep, that’s why I did the same thing to my Camaro. The wiring harness was old, brittle, and had been hacked on by too many previous owners. Doing a new harness was a pain but the results were totally worth it.

I bet you felt ten times better after seeing the rats nest of a wiring job in the trash. From the sounds of it you’ll be saving tons of time just starting from scratch compared to tracing and redoing botched splices.

Another win for old cars with wiring so simple the diagram only uses one sheet of paper.

I started making a wiring diagram

True, I started traicing it on a simple A4 sheet

Well it was quick relief, the wiring is pretty simple

Hard decision to make, but quite relieving when you do. On most project (car and non-car alike) I frequently need a big run up to get over the “I don’t want to make it worse” hump.
